How to Use Your Word Processor

Creating and Applying Styles

Using your word processor or desktop publishing program, you can create styles—sets of formatting that can be applied to text and objects—to simplify the task of formatting your document.

Creating and Modifying Styles

In Microsoft Word, you can create a style by using the Styles and Formatting task pane. To show the task pane, use the FORMAT > STYLES & FORMATTING menu command from the main menu.

The Styles & Formatting Task PaneTo create a new style, click on the New Style button in the Styles and Formatting Task Pane. The New Style dialog will appear.

To modify a style, hover your mouse cursor over its name in the Styles and Formatting Task Pane, click on the down arrow that appears, and choose Modify. The Modify Style dialog box will appear.
