Online Writing Examples

LINK 1: www.pbs.org

Go to the PBS Web site. Notice how color, graphics, pictures and typography are used to make this Web site easy to read.

1. What devices does this Web site use to keep people interested and to discourage them from easily clicking to another location? What visual cues (see page 170) are used to break up the gray monotony of a computer screen? How does this Web site incorporate other capabilities of the Internet, such as audio and interactive communication?

2. The PBS Web site was nominated as a top site by The Webby Awards, which has been called "The Oscars of the Internet." Go to The Webby Awards site at www.Webbyawards.com and click on "The Best Sites of the Year." Which sites follow principles of good writing, as described in Chapter 7 (see page 170)? Look for sites that are well-organized and that start with the most general information about the organization or topic and then drill down to the specific. Which sites anticipate questions that readers might ask or information they might want? Which sites and home pages are easiest to use and navigate? Why? What specific features make certain sites easier or more intuitive to use?

LINK 2: www.salonmagazine.com

While many print magazines, such as Newsweek, Forbes and The New Republic, also have online versions, Salon Magazine was created just for the Internet. Compare how Salon differs from the online versions of print magazines. Go to www.salonmagazine.com and notice the use of graphics, pictures, links, type size and white space. Also connect with the online versions of some print magazines by substituting the title in the Web address. Look for the design elements noted above. How does Salon Magazine differ?
