ASSIGNMENT 1
Consider these two sentences:
The student walked into the room.
John cried when the ball hit him.
Now name five possible verbs that might replace "walked" and five that might replace "cried" but that tell us something slightly different about how the student walked or how John cried. Briefly explain how the action changes as the verb changes. For instance, strolled could be used in the first sentence. What is visually suggested by "strolled?" How does that tell us something more specific about how the student walks? Answer those questions for all 10 of your verb choices.
What other details might make the sentences stronger and more concrete?

ASSIGNMENT 3
Attend an event or activity that allows you to carefully observe the participants and activity. Exposure to the event or activity may be brief. But while you are there, be certain that you jot down details: colors, smells, mannerisms, sounds, snatches of conversation. Then construct several clear, coherent sentences that describe what you observed. Be certain that you allow telling details to reveal the sense of the event and the people involved.
