Online Writing Examples

LINK 1: www.citysearch.com

Go to this city magazine Web site. Choose a city and then a category. What elements of good writing seem to be especially important for this type of Web site? Compare and contrast the writing style and details found in the same category and city at www.sidewalk.com, which is discussed on page 8. (Note: They don't cover all the same cities.)

LINK 2: www.slate.com

This is the Web site for Slate Magazine, which bills itself as an "online magazine of news, politics and culture." Notice the mix of style and presentation. In typical online style, the opening page tries to be brief and punchy. Go to "today's papers," which provides a summary of the main news stories in the major newspapers in the U.S. What does Slate do to achieve clarity in its summaries? (Be sure to look at more than one day's worth.) Also, click on the msnbc.com site at the end of the newspaper summary. How does the news presentation at MSNBC compare with the newspaper summary? What characterizes the writing at both locations? Do you see evidence of the good writing principles discussed in chapter 1? How might either of these sites be better written?
