The five authors of "Writing Across the Media" are faculty members in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., where each teaches, among other courses, Media Writing and Information Gathering. Their method of teaching that course was honored by the Teaching Standards Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in 1997 and 1998 and was featured in the article, "Ability Grouping in Media Writing and the Gap in Mechanical Skills" by Kanihan, Bunton and Neuzil published in Journalism and Mass Communication Educator in 1998.
Kristie Bunton completed a Ph.D. in mass communication at Indiana University and master's and bachelor's degrees in journalism at the University of Missouri. She has worked as a newspaper reporter and in nonprofit public relations for public health and educational organizations. Her research, which examines the ethical performance of news media, has been published in the Journal of Mass Media Ethics. Bunton is a frequent commentator for Minnesota news media on issues of journalism ethics.
Thomas B. Connery has worked for various newspapers and the Associated Press and has written for magazines. He also has served as an adviser in nonprofit public relations. Connery is an authority on the history, nature and practice of literary journalism, and he edited "A Sourcebook of American Literary Journalism" (Greenwood, 1992). He received a Ph.D. in English from Brown University and an M.A. in journalism from Ohio State University.
Stacey Frank Kanihan holds a Ph.D. in communication from Stanford University, a master's in business administrations from the University of South Florida and a bachelor's in English from Wellesley College. She teaches editing, public relations writing, mass communications research methods and advanced public relations. Her research focuses on political communication, and she has worked as a newspaper reporter, copy editor and corporate public relations writer.
Mark Neuzil is the co-author, with William Kovarik, of "Mass Media and Environmental Conflict: America's Green Crusades" (Sage, 1996). He has worked as a newspaper reporter and editor and wire-service editor, including stints for the Associated Press and the Star Tribune of Minneapolis-St. Paul. He is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Society of Environmental Journalists. He received his Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of Minnesota.
David Nimmer is the author of two books of short stories and a 1993 winner of the Minnesota Book Award for personal narratives. He has worked as a reporter and managing editor at the Minneapolis Star, and as a reporter and associate director at WCCO television, the CBS network affiliate station in Minneapolis-St. Paul. He holds a bachelor's from the University of Wisconsin. His teaching specialties are broadcast writing and reporting and newsroom management.
