The Call to Grammar
For this fall’s issue of Digressions, we engage the issue of grammar instruction. What is its place in the composition classroom, and how do we tackle the demands and tedium of grammar instruction? Five instructors share their diverse approaches to the issue. Melanie Brown of the University of Minnesota offers techniques for personalizing grammar instruction. Susan Muaddi Darraj from Baltimore tackles the "Grammar Obsessed Learner," while Rick Hunter of Northern Michigan University explores his circuitous journey down the "Yellow Brick Road of Grammar Instruction." Katherine Parr of North Central College, Illinois, supplies a handout to streamline the grammar lesson. For practitioners of electronic delivery, Lisa Rashley, assistant professor at the University of South Carolina–Lancaster, presents her approach to online grammar commentary.
