BIOGRAPHY
William Stanley Merwin (1927- ) was born in New York City, and grew up in Union City, NJ and Scranton, PA. The son of a Presbyterian minister, Merwin began writing hymns at age five. He studied writing at Princeton University and earned a post graduate degree in Romance languages. After college he traveled across Europe, eventually stopping in Majorca to tutor the son of poet/historian Robert Graves. Merwin soon returned to America and settled in Boston where he met poets such as Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, and Adrienne Rich, who were all experimenting with a new style of American poetry.
