BIOGRAPHY
Jane Hirshfield (b. 1953) was born in New York City. She is the author of four books of poetry, most recently The Lives of the Heart (1997), and a collection of essays, The Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry (1997). She has also edited and co-translated two collections of poetry by women from the past, Women in Praise of the Sacred: Forty-three Centuries of Spiritual Poetry by Women (1995) and The Ink Dark Moon: Poems by Ono no Komachi and Izumi Shikibu, Women of the Ancient Court of Japan (1990). Hirshfield's awards include the Poetry Center Book Award, the Bay Area Book Reviewers Award, Columbia University's Translation Center Award, and fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations.
