BIOGRAPHY
Robert Herrick (b. 1591) was born in London, England. On taking his M.A. From Cambridge in 1620, he returned to London, where he began to mix with literary circles. There he met Ben Jonson, the poet with whom he is now most closely associated. In 1623 he took holy orders and in 1629 was appointed by Charles I to the Dean Prior In Exeter.Herrick enjoyed the quiet country life that the parish afforded but was ejected under the Commonwealth for his royalist sympathies. (He was reinstated in 1662 after the Restoration.) Just before leaving, he published his major collection of verse, Hesperides (1648), which contains epigrams, epigraphs, elegies, hymns, songs, as well as imitations of the Roman writers Horace and Catullus. He is best known, however, for his love lyrics. He died a bachelor, in his own parish, in 1674 at the age of 83.
