BIOGRAPHY
Joy Harjo (b. 1951) Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Joy Harjo learned about her Indian identity from her great aunt and later became an enrolled member of the Muskogee tribe. She studied painting and theater at the University of New Mexico and went on to receive an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. Harjo began writing poetry because she felt the Native American community needed a stronger voice in American culture. She has taught at several schools in the Southwest and won numerous awards, including the American Book Award and the William Carlos Williams Award. She has published seven books of poetry, and has recently started combining her poetry with music, forming the band Joy Harjo and Poetic Justice.
