BIOGRAPHY
Rachel Hadas (b. 1948) was born in New York City. Her distinguished academic career began at Radcliffe College where she studied classics. She transferred to Harvard University and graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. 1969. She received her M.A. from Johns Hopkins University and Ph.D. in comparative literature from Princeton University. After leaving Harvard, Hadas spent four years in Greece, an experience that influenced much of her poetry especially her first two collections, Starting from Troy(1975) and Slow Transparency (1983). She has published four other volumes of poetry as well as several translations and essays. She is the recipient of many honors including a Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry, an Ingram Merril Foundation grant in poetry, and an award in literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Since 1981 she has taught English at Rutgers University, Newark New Jersey.
