BIOGRAPHY
Faiz Ahmed Faiz (b. 1911) was born in Sialkot, British India (now Pakistan). He was educated a Lahore where he studied both English and Arabic literature and philosophy. After graduating he became a lecturer in English at M.A.O. College, Amirstar, but left to serve in the British Indian Army during World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. With the division of the subcontinent in 1947, he resigned from the army and moved to the newly formed Pakistan, where became the editor of The Pakistan Times. In 1951 he was found guilty of participating in a conspiracy to overthrow the Pakistani government and sentenced to death. Faiz's punishment was changed to a prison sentence, and in jail he wrote the poems that would be collected in the volumes, Dast-e-Saba, (1953) and Zinda-Nama (1956). After his release from prison, Faiz returned to his post at The Pakistan Times, but was removed from this position for being a leftist after a military coup in 1958. A year later civilian rule was restored, and he was appointed secretary of the Pakistan Art Council. Faiz continued to publish poetry and in 1962 was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize by the Soviet Union. In 1984 Faiz died following an asthma attack.
