BIOGRAPHY Admirers and detractors agree that Eliot was the most imposing and influential poet writing between the world wars. His poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (1917) and his collection, The Waste Land (1922) are among his earliest and most famous. Acknowledging his dependence on a preexisting cultural tradition, Eliot explained: "The existing order is complete before the new work arrives; for order to persist after the supervention of novelty, the whole existing order must be altered." Eliot also wrote plays, including Murder in the Cathedral (1935) and The Cocktail Party (1950). The long-running Broadway musical Cats is based on his 1939 verse collection, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1948.
