BIOGRAPHY
Rosario Castellanos (b. 1923) was born in Mexico City, but raised on her family's sugar and coffee plantations in Comitan, located in Mayan southern Mexico. Even at a young age, Castellanos was disturbed by the poverty of the Indians working on her father's land. When Castellanos was a teenager her family moved back to Mexico City, where, after graduating from high school, she studied sociology at Universidad Nacional Autonoma Mexico. Castellanos added the study of literature to her course work and in 1950 graduated with a master's degree in philosophy. Her first collection of poetry, Trayectoria del polvo, was published in 1948. Although she published several essays and poetry collections in the late 1940s and early 1950s, it wasn't unitl the publication of her first novel, Balun-Canan (The Nine Gurdians), in 1957 that Castellanos started to receive international critical attention. She continued to publish poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, becoming known for her explorations of feminism as well as class issues. In addition to her literary success, Castellanos served as Mexico's ambassador to Israel from 1971 to 1974. Castellanos was living in Tel Aviv when she was accidentally electrocuted in 1974.
