BIOGRAPHY
Yehuda Amichai (b. 1924) was born in Germany and moved with his family to Jerusalem in 1936. Amichai fought with the Jewish Brigade of the British Army during World War II and in the War of Independence. After the war, he attended Hebrew University. His first volume of poetry, Achshav Uve-Yamin HaAharim [Now and in Other Days] appeared in 1955 and immediately attracted the interest of the poetry-reading public. Widely read and admired outside his country, his works have been translated into 33 languages.; He is also the author of two novels and a book of short stories, his Collected Poems appeared in 1963, and The Selected Poems of Yehuda Amichai was published in 1996.
