BIOGRAPHY
George Bowering (b. 1936) was born in British Columbia's Okangan Valley. After graduating high school, he became an aerial photographer in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He received a B.A. in history and an M.A. in English from the University of British Columbia. While teaching at the University of Calgary, Bowering founded the literary magazine Iago, which ran from 1964 to 1974. He published his first volume of poetry, Sticks and Stones, in 1963. He published four more collections of poetry before the publication of his first novel, Mirror on the Floor (1967). He has published over 40 books of poetry, fiction, and criticism, including Rocky Mountain Foot (1968), The Gangs of Kosmos (1969), and Burning Water (1980), all of which won the Governor General's Literary Award. Since 1972 he has been a professor of English at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia.
