The 1562 Map: Full View

This is a full view of the Gutiérrez map.  What continents are represented on this map?  What European countries are visible?  Why those and not others?  What areas of the New World are shown in more detail than others?  Which areas look most like our modern maps?  What real and fanciful figures can you discern on the map? 

Such maps were intended to be tools of exploration.  As such, what features of the land are emphasized in the maps?  What were the Europeans most interested in finding?  What observable features were left off these maps?  How might a map compiled by an English cartographer have looked different from this Spanish map?
