When Is a Footnote or Endnote Needed?

If you quote from, paraphrase, or closely summarize your research sources, you need to use a footnote or endnote to tell readers where you found the information. This will assure readers that the source of your information is a credible one and enable them to find the source if they wish to.

Four types of statements must be footnoted:

Beyond this rule, you must use your own judgment. Try to put yourself in the position of the average reader of your paper and ask, Will this reader have a question about or be surprised about what I have said? If you believe the answer to be yes, then it is best to footnote the information.
