Back: Where to Put Your Notes: Footnotes and Endnotes

The Danger of Plagiarism

Whenever you prepare a written assignment while working directly from sources or from notes taken from sources, you must be careful how you use them. Be sure not to use in your own writing sentences or even long phrases that come directly from your sources. Even if you do this unintentionally, you have committed plagiarism. You must place all such words within quotation marks and write the source of the quoted material in a footnote or endnote. Plagiarism can lead to a failing grade or even to suspension.
