Using An Electronic Writer's Reference

Please note that only the Punctuation section and the Glossary are active in the demo version.

LOOKING UP INFORMATION

Main Menu

  • The program starts at the Main Menu.
  • From the Main Menu, click on Punctuation to display a list of topics. Click on a topic (such as P1 The comma) to go to the Topic Menu.
  • To return to the Main Menu at any time, click on the Main Menu tab.
  • To go to the Exercise Menu, click on EXERCISE MENU at the top right of the Main Menu screen.

Topic Menu

  • The Topics Menu has a divided screen. The upper window highlights the topic you have selected from the Main Menu; the lower window lists the subtopics.
  • To go to the text, lick on one of the subtopics listed in the lower window. You can also click on the topic title in the lower window.
  • To return to the Topic Menu at any time, click on the Topics Menu tab.

Index

  • To go to the Index, click on the Index tab.
  • The default search setting is Topic. To find an entry by topic, either (1) click on a letter of the alphabet and use the scroll bar or (2) type in a word and scroll if necessary to find the exact word you want. To go to the text, single-click on the index entry.
  • If you know the section number (such as P1-c) click on Code and type in or scroll to the section number. Click on the section number and title to go to that section.
  • To search by correction symbol (such as a frag), click on Correction Symbol and type in or scroll to the correction symbol. Then click on the correction symbol to go to the section which explains the symbol.

Glossary of Usage

  • The Glossary explains correct usage of frequently misued words.
  • To go to the Glossary, click on the Glossary tab.
  • To find an entry, either (1) click on a letter of the alphabet and use the scroll bar or (2) type in a word and scroll if necessary to find the exact entry. Some entries include hot links (underlined red numbers) to sections in the text; click on the section number to jumt to that section.
  • Use the A-Z button to return to the initial search screen.

Navigating the Text

  • Back and forward arrows.
  • Click on the bright blue arrows at the bottom of the screen to page forward and backward within a topic.
  • A light blue arrow indicates that you are on the first or last page of a topic.

Brown footprints

  • Click on the brown footprints at the bottom of the screen to retrace your steps, in order. through pages, menus, and hot links you have just visited.
  • Use the footprints to return to your place in the text after you have followed a hot link to another section.

Text pages

  • Click on bold red text to open a pop-up box containing a definition or explanation. Click anywh4ere in the pop-up box to close it.
  • Click on underlined red text to use a hot link to jump to a related section. To get back to your place in the text, click on the brown footprints at the bottom of the screen.
  • Click on a NOTE or MORE EXAMPLES button to call up a window with additional information. click anywhere in the windows to close it.

USING OTHER FEATURES

Help

  • For help, click on the question mark at the bottom of the screen.
  • Click anywhere on the screen to return to the text.

Bookmarks

  • To bookmark a section, click on the Bookmarks tab while you are on any page in that section. Then click on ADD BOOKMARK. Bookmarked sections are saved in a default file named mylist.
  • To go to a bookamred section, click on the Bookmarks tab, highlight the section in the display list, and click on GO TO BOOKMARK.
  • To create a customized file of bookmarks, click on NEW BOOKMARK FILE, type a name for the file you want to create, an click SAVE. (The file is saved in the An Electronic Writer's Reference 4.0 Demo folder.)
  • You can create any number of customized files. To save bookmarked sections in a particular file, first make sure that the list is hiighlighted in the Bookmark window. If ti is not, click on OPEN BOOKMARK FILE, choose the appropriate file from the displayed list, and click Open. The bookmark the sections you want to save in that file.
  • You can copy your bookmark file to a disk or attach it to an e-mail and deliver it to another Electronic Writer's Reference user.

Printer

  • When the printer icon is visible, you can print the current page by clicking on the icon.

WWW

  • Click on the WWW button at the bottom of the screen to go to a list of Internet addresses. Follow the directions at the top of the screen. You can log on to the Internet if you have Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  • You can add to the list of Internet addresses by clicking on ADD ADDRESS and then typing an address in the box. You may also add a title and description of the sit in the description box.
  • To remove an address, highlight it and click on REMOVE ADDRESS.

Quit

  • To exit the program, click on the Quit tab. If you are exiting from the Exercises, you will have the option to return to An Electronic Writer's Reference or to quit the program.

Calling Up the Exercises

  • From the Main Menu, click on EXERCISE MENU at the top right of the screen to go to the Exercise Menu. From the Exercise Menu, click on a part title to see a list of exercises. Then click on an exercise title in the Punctuation section to go to it.
  • From a particular section of the handbook, click on the Exercise tab at the bottom right of the screen to go to a related exercise. (if no exercises are available, this tab will be inactive.)
  • To return to the Exercise Menu rom an exercise, click on EXERCISE MENU at the bottom of the screen.

Moving between An Electronic Writer's Reference and the Exercises

  • The instructions for each exercise include a hot link (underlined red section number) that takes you to the related section of the electronic handbook.
  • To go back to the exercise from the handbook, click on RETURN TO EXERCISES at the top right of the screen.

Working the Exercises

  • Within the instructions, click on the bold red word "example" to open a pop-up example. Click anywhere in the pop-up box to close it.
  • Follow the directions to complete the exercise. Move from item to item using the blue arrows at the bottom of the screen.
  • After you complete each exercise item, the program will tell you wheterh your answer is correct or incorrect and why.

Scoring the Exercises

  • After completing an exercise set, check your score by clicking on SCORE at the bottom of the screen.
  • The Edit and Compare exercises are not scorable because more than one right answer is possible. After editing the exercise in the Editing window, you can compare you own editing with possible revisions by clicking on POSSIBLE REVISIONS at the bottom of the screen.

Printing the Exercises

  • Click on the printer icon at the bottom of the screen.
  • A pop-up box will prompt you to type your name, your section number, and the date. You will also be given the option of printing the following: the exercise sentences, you answers, responses to your ansewrs, and your score.

Quit

  • To return to An Electronic Writer's Reference, click on EXERCISE MENU at the bottom of any exercise screen. From the Exercise Menu, click on A Writer's Reference at the top of the screen.
  • The QUIT bottom at the bottom of the exercise screen allows you to return to An Electronic Writer's Reference or to quit the program.
