Insert commas where necessary in the following sentences.

1. The Chinese have attempted to modernize Lhasa but an ancient aura still pervades the city.

 

2. The Potala Palace, the "Palace of the Gods," dominates Lhasa and this immense eleven-story complex of buildings is where the Dalai Lama has traditionally lived.

 

3. Lhasa was founded in A.D. 400 as a fortress but after the Potala Palace was built, Lhasa became a religious center.

 

4. The Tibetans banned Europeans from this "Forbidden City" so many Europeans tried to enter the city illegally.

 

5. The history of Lhasa is unsettled for the city has often been under the harsh military rule of the Chinese.

 

6. The ancient Mayans built an imposing pyramid in the Yucatan jungle of Mexico but that structure is not the only intriguing evidence of their civilization at Chichen Itza.

 

7. Near the pyramid is a ball court with stone hoops set in its walls and from the intricate illustrations carved there, archaeologists have been able to learn more about the game.

 

8. The players must have had a real incentive to win for the leader of the losing team was killed by his opponents.

 

9. Mayan builders created the structures at Chichen Itza after careful astronomical calculation and the designs of the buildings demonstrate the civilization's interest in solar and lunar positions.

 

10. The ancient Mayans vacated Chichen Itza for reasons no longer known yet the Yucatan Peninsula's residents still include many of their descendants.
