The growing popularity of sports utility vehicles in the United States have become a matter of concern for those in the auto insurance and auto safety fields. Far greater damage is being inflicted by sports utility vehicles, or SUVs, than by conventional cars when involved in road accidents because of their heavier weights and higher centers of gravity. Other drivers also complain that the large SUVs blocks their view and that SUV owners are aggressive on the road. Safety experts report, in fact, that because of their relatively high price tag, most SUVs today are owned and operated by affluent, middle-aged men and women who are relatively cautious drivers. Most are married and nearly half has children, putting these drivers in the "responsible family person" category. It is warned by some safety experts that the real dangers posed by SUVs are not reflected in current statistics because those who now own the vehicles are such careful drivers. But what will happen in a few years when these owners began to sell their large, heavy vehicles? A higher rate of SUV crashes is predicted by safety experts as the vehicles age. They also note that heavy drinkers and young people, who tends to drive older cars, traditionally have had high accident rates. Research by auto manufacturers reveal that the vast majority of teenagers favor SUVs over cars, but cannot afford them. When younger and less cautious drivers are able to buy used SUVs at greatly reduce prices, the true dangers these heavier vehicles represent may become alarmingly clear. To counter this trend, experts recommend that the government raises the gas tax, which might deter riskier drivers from choosing gas-guzzling SUVs.
