Exercise 7 Implied pronoun reference
Rewrite the following sentences to eliminate implied references.

1. An article in the New York Times describes the discovery of old burial grounds in Manhattan. He recounts how the efforts to protect graves in one cemetery dating from the 1700s have led to other campaigns.

 

2. The first of more than four hundred bodies was discovered when they were building an office tower in lower Manhattan in 1991.

 

3. Research of the area's history revealed that it was once a burial ground for African slaves, and it lay beyond the city walls.

 

4. Although most applauded the Landmarks Preservation Commission's decision to protect the black burial grounds by making the area a historic district, it has been accused of setting a precedent that would restrict development in the city.

 

5. Subsequent campaigns to protect burial grounds have been criticized; they charge that many such campaigns are really attempts to challenge unpopular development proposals.
