BIOGRAPHY
Elizabeth Spires (b. 1952) Spires, born in Lancaster, Ohio, earned a B.A. from Vassar College (1974) and an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University (1979). From 1976–1977, she worked in publishing; from 1977 to 1981, she became a free-lance writer; and, thereafter, she taught at several colleges including Loyola College in Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University, and Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. In 1985 she married the novelist Madison Smartt Bell. She has won several awards and honors, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1981). In addition to several volumes of poetry, including Worldling (1995), she has published a number of juvenile books. Commenting about her work, she has remarked, "I find myself...interested in writing about childhood experiences related to growing up Catholic."
