D. Snodgrass (b. 1926) Born in Pennsylvania, son of an accountant, William Dewitt Snodgrass attended Geneva College, earned three degrees from the University of Iowa (B.A., 1949; M.A., 1951; M.F.A., 1953), then taught at Cornell University, the University of Rochester, and Wayne State University. Acknowledged as one of the original confessional poets, he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1960 for his first collection, Heart's Needle (1959). His poems are deeply personal and often involve references to the wives and children from his three marriages. Surprising critics who had grown tired of his self-analytical style, Snodgrass distinguished himself again with his third collection, The Führer Bunker: A Cycle of Poems in Progress (1977), in which he explores the psyches of Hitler's senior officials during the month they shared his bunker in 1945. His more recent poetry collections include Selected Poems, 1957–1987 (1987) and The Fuehrer Bunker: The Complete Cycle (1995). |
