Thomas Campion (1567-1620) I Care Not for These Ladies LINKS Thomas Campion (1567 - 1620) http://www.luminarium.org/renlit/campion.htm From Luminarium, an anthology of English literature from medieval times through the early seventeenth century, this site provides useful background information about Campion's life and works. BIOGRAPHY Thomas Campion (1567–1620) Campion spent his early childhood in London, studied at Cambridge, then returned to London in 1586 to study law. It appears that Campion served, for a short time, as a soldier in France. In 1595, he published a collection of Latin poems, Poemata. After the publication of this volume, he apparently went abroad to study medicine and, later, music (though it is not known when or where). His first volume of English poems, A Book of Ayres, appeared in 1601; the other three volumes appeared between 1601 and 1617. Campion also wrote masques for presentation at court, often composing the music for his own lyrics. Toward the end of his life, he wrote a treatise on music that became a standard text. |
