How to Use Your Word Processor

Checking Your Spelling

Most word processors, such as Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect, provide built-in spelling checkers. To use these tools, click on the TOOLS menu and then on SPELLING.

In addition, the default setting for Word and WordPerfect is to check spelling as you type. When the word processing program detects a word that might be misspelled, it places a colored line underneath it. If you find this distracting, you can turn off this behavior. In Microsoft Word:

  1. Click on the TOOLS > OPTIONS menu command (in Windows) or the OPTIONS > PREFERENCES menu command (on the Mac).
  2. Click on the Spelling & Grammar tab.
  3. Uncheck the box next to Check spelling as you type.
