Contains multiple map exercises and activities to build map literacy. Each volume features 7 maps introducing basic geographic themes — location, place, region, movement, and interaction — and 15–17 maps presenting specific topics, events, movements, and concepts in U.S. history.

The map exercises are structured to promote connections between thinking geographically and thinking historically. They begin with a general discussion about the map in its historical context, then proceed to highlight several specific things to look for, and conclude with one or more short activities designed to pull it all together.

One-minute map quizzes test students’ knowledge. In each volume, 15–17 quizzes prompt students to identify key places in America’s history. Blank physical and political outline maps of the U.S. and the world offer additional opportunities for quizzing.
