The Renaissance and Reformation coverage has been thoroughly revised and reorganized from three chapters to two — now with more on Renaissance art and architecture, the Ottomans’ influence on the West, and the European Reformation in the context of global exploration.
A revised organization with streamlined narrative makes key themes more prominent. Carefully reviewing each line of prose and tightening the book from 30 to 29 chapters, the authors have trimmed the narrative while strengthening the connections among events and bringing the most important events to the fore. Other changes include a newly united and enhanced discussion of early Canaanites and Hebrews; expanded coverage of the first and second crusades; consolidated coverage of the scientific revolution, of Napoleon, and of industrialization; and an updated final chapter that includes the role of oil in Russia and expansion of the European Union.
