More Support for Success in College
- A new “College Communication Skills” section at the beginning of the book helps students interact more successfully with other students and with their instructors, whether in class, in person, or by e-mail. Coverage includes advice on clarity, tone, avoiding offensive language and emoticons, acronyms, and other shorthand in essays and e-mails to instructors.
- “College Success Tips” in every chapter give students more help adjusting to the academic world, taking the general advice presented in Chapter 1 and applying it in the context of specific activities and assignments. Tips focus on everything from understanding the limits of spell-checkers to finding your advisor to taking good notes in class.
A new annotated student essay in Chapter 14, “Moving from Paragraph to Essay,” about the pros and cons of using Facebook, gives students more help with basics like topic sentences, thesis statements, and support in their writing.
New and updated examples and exercises are on such engaging topics as manga; Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayer; blogs and social networking sites; the Nobel Peace Prize; locally grown food; and animal experimentation.
Over half of the readings, well-chosen by authors who know what works in the classroom, are new, including essays by Henry Louis Gates, Maxine Hong Kingston, and professional skateboarder Tony Hawk.
