Lee A. Jacobus

Lee A. Jacobus is professor emeritus of English at the University of Connecticut and the author/editor of popular English and drama textbooks, among them the full and compact versions of The Bedford Introduction to Drama, Sixth Edition (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2009); and The Longman Anthology of American Drama. He has written scholarly books on Paradise Lost, on the works of John Cleveland, and on the works of Shakespeare, including Shakespeare and the Dialectic of Certainty. He is also a playwright and author of fiction. Two of his plays — Fair Warning and Long Division — were produced in New York by the American Theater of Actors, and Dance Therapy, three one-act plays, was produced in New York at Where Eagles Dare Theatre. He has recently written a book of short stories, Volcanic Jesus, which is set in Hawaii.

Joseph Kerman

Joseph Kerman and Gary Tomlinson are leading musicologists and music educators. Kerman, Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley, served two terms as Chair of the Music Department, and Tomlinson has done the same at the University of Pennsylvania. Both are known as inspirational and wide-ranging teachers; between them, their course offerings encompass harmony and ear training, opera, world music, interdisciplinary studies, seminars in music history and criticism, and—many times—Introduction to Music for nonmajor students.

Beverly Lawn

Beverly Lawn (PD, SUNY-Stony Brook), Professor of English Emerita, taught introductory fiction courses at Adelphi University for almost three decades. She is editor or coeditor several literature anthologies, including Literature: A Portable Anthology, and is also the author of Throat of Feathers, a book of poems.

James Phelan

James Phelan is a professor of English and chair of the English department at the Ohio State University. He is editor of the award-winning journal Narrative, and has written and edited several books on literary theory, including Worlds from Words (1981), Reading People, Reading Plots (1989), and Narrative as Rhetoric (1996), and has published a memoir of teaching literature in the academy, Beyond the Tenure Track (1991). With Gerald Graff, he is coeditor of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: A Case Study in Critical Controversy (1995).

Johanna M. Smith

Johanna M. Smith is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she teaches drama, law and literature, and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British literature. She has published numerous articles in the latter fields, as well as a Twayne guide to Mary Shelley and a coedited anthology of eighteenth-century British women's life writings. Her current research focus is British women in the public sphere from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century.

Nancy Sommers

Nancy Sommers, who has taught composition and directed composition programs for thirty years, now teaches writing and mentors new writing teachers at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. She led Harvard’s Expository Writing Program for twenty years, directing the first-year writing program and establishing Harvard’s WAC program. A two-time Braddock Award winner, Sommers is well known for her research and publications on student writing. Her articles Revision Strategies of Student and Experienced Writers and Responding to Student Writing are two of the most widely read and anthologized articles in the field of composition. Her recent work involves a longitudinal study of college writing to understand the role writing plays in undergraduate education. Sommers is the lead author on Hacker handbooks, all published by Bedford/St. Martin’s, and is coauthor of Fields of Reading, Ninth Edition (2010).

Susanne L. Wofford is Associate professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition to articles on Spenser and Shakespeare, she has written The Choice of Achilles: The Ideology of Figure in the Epic (1992). She is currently completing a book on Shakespeare entitled Theatrical Power: The Politics of Representation on the Shakespearean Stage.
